Historical and comparative research

I am working on a research proposal which is looking at how single parents respond to stereotypes.  Apart from looking for ideas on how I could use a historical-comparative approach in this instance, I am also looking at the question: How can a sensitivity to historical and cross-cultural comparison help researchers?  Any suggestions would be helpful.
