Peterloo Massacre and the Miners Strike
This question is on the Peterloo Massacre of 1819 and The Miners Strike of the early 80's. With reference to problems of policing I must compare and contrast issues surrounding these events. I would just like some help from you deciding what areas I should cover. This is what I have so far:
- Why they were meeting/striking - Miners strike wanted to have security of their jobs. Peterloo protested for ?
-Media - In miners strike media was pretty much used as a tool by the government to discredit the miners. At peterloo their was just one newspaper reporter present, possibly explaining why most people in Britain have not heard of the Peterloo Massacre.
-Abuse - Both cases show police abusing thier powers
-Neutrality - Police are there to be neutral. In both cases they were exploited by the powers (upper class mainly at Peterloo and Government in the case of the miners strike)
- Cavalry - Horses/Yeomanry were sent in to control the crowds on both occasions. In both cases all it did was cause more problems because they caused panic among crowds and the men on them were attacking the crowds
- Unionism - Peterloo was the first time the working class had a voice. There is no crime in having groups meeting up.
- Poverty - In both cases people were living in poverty.
- Working class seen as threat - At peterloo, most of the people were families dressed in their sunday best, surely they pose little physical threat. Miners seen as major enemy by Margret Thatcher.
- Restriction in the Truth from the government and media
I just need help narrowing it down into 4 or 5 major points to write about in the exam. If you think I have left any thing out, I would appreciate it if you could help point me in the right direction.
Thanks
