Trigonometry

Locate each point in a coordinate system. Draw a ray from the origin through the given point. Indicate with an arrow the angle in standard position having smallest positive measure. Then find the distance r from the origin to the point, using the distance formula. I am having a hard time with this problem. (√3,1) =√-(√3)2 + (-1)2 =√-3 + 1 =√-2 The correct answer is 2. I know we can't have a negative square root because this is a non-real number. If you can give me the steps on how to get the correct answer it will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
