Nonlinear Function

I'm so confused with this series of questions. Unfortunately, I don't even know where to begin. Can you help me? An open-top box is to be constructed from a 6 by 8 foot rectangular cardboard by cutting out equal squares at each corner and the folding up the flaps. Let x denote the length of each side of the square to be cut out. 1 - Find the function V that represents the colume of the box in terms of x. 2 - Graph this function and show the graph over the valid range of the variable x and show graph. 3 - Using the graph, what is the value of x that will produce the maximum volume? Any guidance you can provide will very much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Failures of column and row

Find the possible failures in the column picture and the row picture, and match them up. Success would be 3 columns whose combinations give every vector b, which matches with 3 planes in the row picture that intersect at one point (the unique solution x). Give numerical examples of these two types of failure: a. 3 columns lie on the same line; 3 planes are parallel (then if b happens to lie on that line of columns, the 3 planes meet in a ... ) b. 3 columns in the same plane, but no two on the same line. Then 3 planes do what? Which b’s are okay? Now give numerical examples of the other types of failure in the column and row pictures.
