I need help understanding this assignment. I have read it over many times, but I need someone to explain it to me in their own words. The assignment is as follows: Investigate some of the New Deal programs that FD Roosevelt instituted. Select one of these programs that you think would be effective today. Explain how and why the government should implement the program. Anticipate your opponents arguments about constitutionality and defend the policy's legality.

Comparing history to detective work
My professor said that doing history is comparable to the work of a crime detective (i.e.,Inspector Columbo) but the professor didn't explain how...do you understand what he's driving at? We have also been asked to list kinds of evidence historians use in finding out the "truth" about history...if you could help me answer this I would be grateful. (Our professor is very vague). Thank you.
