Public figures often support a cause. What happens to those diseases without a supporter?

The Archives of Internal Medicine and the Journal of the National Cancer Institute published interesting studies. Researchers documented what many doctors had reported (and I saw first hand in by business) following the broadcast: of Katy Couric having an colonoscopy on T.V. Rates rose from an average of 15 per month before Couric's test to 18.1 per month after (per University of Michigan Health System). Public figures often support a cause. What happens to those diseases without a supporter? What do you think of the disparity? Do you agree with disease/condition sponsorship?

Disaster Preparedness Kit

Last June 'O' magazine had a great article about the Avian flu including what to put in your preparedness kits. The idea is groceries, pharmacies, etc. may be shut down for a period of time so a kit needs to be created that would include a couple of cases of bottled water, supply of meds, protein bars, batteries as well as Tylenol. It was a well done article that made you think. Have any of you thought about a preparedness kit?
