1. ARTIFICIAL REEFS For nearly 30 years, offshore oil platforms have been present off the coast of California. During that period of time, marine life has spread extensively on and around the oil platform structures, as if the platforms themselves are a part of the marine environment. The adapting marine life around oil platforms has become a common sight lately for many other oil structures off the coast of Texas, Louisiana, and Florida. As the oil structures live out their remaining years of oil consumption, one of the issues under consideration by the oil companies is whether to remove the structures completely or leave them as they exist so the marine habitat remains undisturbed. ... click for more

Biodiversity Museum Exhibit Presentation
Imagine you have been hired by a museum. Your first responsibility will be to design an exhibit that emphasizes the importance of biodiversity. The exhibit should focus on the Amazon region. When outlining the causes, be sure to show the relationship between deforestation and wildlife extinction in this region and others. In the deforestation segment of your exhibit, you should show estimations of the current and potential impact of deforestation on world cultures. Finally, take the visitors from the land to the aquatic life zones. Describe methods that could be (or already are being) implemented to preserve the present level of aquatic biodiversity. Organize your proposed design in a presen... click for more

Select one region of the world and identify at least two serious environmental problems
Select one region of the world and identify at least two serious environmental problems, such as soil degradation, air or water pollution, pesticide misuse, overpopulation, wildlife extinction or threatened biodiversity, and deforestation, that impact this region. What seem to be the root causes of these problems? • Determine what strategies local governments, businesses, or individual citizens can implement to lessen the negative impact on the environment in this region and help prepare it for a more sustainable future. Keep in mind that you may have very limited resources available to you in this region. Are there practical solutions to these problems that can be funded, developed, and im... click for more

You have been hired by the largest natural history museum in the world (Miller, 2005). Your first responsibility will be to design an exhibit that emphasizes the importance of biodiversity. The exhibit should focus on the region you have chosen for your final project and should introduce visitors to the causes of wildlife extinction as well as demonstrate ways wildlife extinction impacts our world. When outlining the causes, be sure to show the relationship between deforestation and wildlife extinction in this region and others. In the deforestation segment of your ex... click for more
