Nathaniel Hawthorne's "The Birthmark" and Flannery O'Connor's "Good Country People" both deal (at least in part) with the idea of self image and self esteem based on physical characteristics and body markings. Today's American culture has a multitude of views on physical perfection and body modification through piercing and tattooing. I am researching the modern views of self esteem based on physical characteristics. I have to reflect in a paper on how the views presented in either (or both) of these short stories are the same and/or different from the modern views.
