How on-line library statistics could be manipulated versus that of a traditional library (a hybrid of the two questions). In traditional systems, they would track how many times a book or magazine article was "checked-out" to determine how wide of an audience was reached by a particular author or subject matter. In today's on-line world, the number of "hits" is monitored to track a site's popularity. Often times, I am prompted to go to a particular site by my search engine which may receive a promotion or kick-back from the site.
