copper Sulfate

As a Env. Biology research project, we were doing toxicity testing and we used copper sulfate as a reducing agent why is this such a good reducing agent. Is there a mechanism that can help to explain this. A part of our final paper is to explain why we chose copper sulfate and not something else, we picked it because when looking at research journals and scientific papers it was the most widely used but we can not put that in the paper can you help us with this? Why use copper sulfate when trying to treat toxic substances?
