Air pollution

37) Consider an area-source box model for air pollution above a peninsula of land. the length of the box is 15 km, its width is 80 km, and a radiation inversion restricts mixing to 15 m. Wind is blowing clean air into the long dimention of the box at 0.5 m/s. Between 4 and 6 pm there are 250,000 vehicles on the road, each being driven 40 km and each emitting 4 g/km of CO.

a) Find the average rate of CO emissions during this two-hour period (g CO/s per m^2 of land)

b) Estimate the concentration of CO at 6pm if there was no CO in the air at 4pm. Assume that CO is conservative and that there is instantaneous and complete mixing in thh box

c) if the windspeed is zero, use the formula to derive relationship between CO and time and use it to find the CO over the peninsula at 6pm

(formula: LWH(dC/dt) = Qs*L*W + W*H*u*Cin - W* H*u*C
where C = pollutant concentration in the airshed, mg/m^3
          Cin = concentration in the incoming air, mg/m^3
          Qs = emission rate per unit area, mg/m^2-s
          H  = mixing height, m
          L  =  length of airshed, m
          W  = width of airshed, m
          u  = average windspeed against one edge of the box, m/s)

Energy and Mass Transfer - A lagoon is to be designed to accomodate an input flow of 0.10 m^3/s of nonconservative pollutant with concentration 30.0mg/L and reaction rate 0.20/day. The effluent from the lagoon must have pollutant concentration of less than 10.0mg/L. Assuming complete mixing, how large must the lagoon be?
ideal gas law - question is: what volume of oxygen gas is required to burn 0.5562 of propane gas C3H8 if both gases are emasured at the same temperature. Please explain how to set up problem, thank-you. When it states at the same temperature and pressure does this mean STP? Thank-you.
the amount of natural gas burned is proportional - please see attached
Growth rate/doubling time - 3.4) Suppose we express the amount of land under cultivation as the product of four factors: Land = (land/food) x (food/kcal) x (kcal/person) x (population) The annual growth rates for each factor are: 1) the land required to grow a unit of food, -1% (due to greater productivity per unit of land) 2) the amount of food grown per calorie of food eaten by a human, ...
Capacity yield - 3.17) A lake has a carrying capacity of 10,000 fish. At the current level of fishing, 2000 fish per year are taken and the fish population seems to hold fairly steady at about 4000. If you wanted to maximize the sustainable yield, what would you suggest in terms of population size and yield?
