Nitrogen fixation-nitrate treated plant response to increases oxygen concentration

In a lab experiment we compared the response of control(Nitrate -) and nitrate treated plants to an increase in oxygen concentrations. I concluded that nitrogenase activity increased in both plants but the increase was slightly higher in the nitrate free plant. Can you explain to me why this happened?
