Negative feedback loops are ways that the body can achieve homeostasis in the body.

How might negative feedback loop explain why people who lose large amounts of weight chain that weight back? Explain the weight cycle in perms of the negative feedback loop. Do you think that weight in humans is regulated by a negative loop? Why or why not? Do you think weight is controlled by a negative feedback loop that is genetically determined? Why or why not?

Many sports drink companies claim that by drinking their products, the body can replenish the water and electrolytes that it lost.

When it replenishes these nutrients, it can rehydrate and regulate its body temperature. Once the body temperature returns to normal, it can then return to physical activity. Explain why sports drinks might or might not aid in thermo regulation. Why do you think knowing abut thermo regulation can help you make informed choices about whether to consume sport drinks or water for staying hydrated and thus maintaining body temperatures.

Sport supplements are examined.

Companies that sell sport supplements make billions of dollars each year claiming by consuming their products the person can lose or gain weight. Assume the body weight is genetically determined and that any gain or loss in weight will cause the body to activate homeostatic mechanisms to cause the body to return to the original weight. What would you tell the companies that sell these products? Why would knowing about the science of weight gain/loss help you make informed decisions about sport supplements?

Imposing high taxes on poor habits to save lives

In the United States, many states now impose taxes on tobacco to discourage smoking and to help offset the health costs associated with smoking. However, heart disease, which has been linked to a high-fat diet, is the country’s number one killer. In addition, more cancer cases in the United States are related to diet than to smoking. Compose a 200-word argument supporting or refuting the following plan: Taxing high-fat foods would be a great way to reduce the incidence of heart disease and help offset the cost of its treatment. The taxes could also be used to educate the public to the dangers of a high-fat diet, in the same way that taxes on cigarettes are used for anti smoking ads.
