Microevolutionary forces

A study of a single grass species at an abondened copper mine, where some patches of soil were contaminated with heavy metals, and some patches were uncontaminated, showed the following: a) all the grass growing on soil contaminated with heavy metals was tolerant of the heavy metals b) grass from uncontaminated sites, just few feet away from contaminated sites, died when planted in the contaminated soil. Given that the grass species grew at the site before the soil was contaminated, explain the finding in terms of microevolutionary forces. Be sure to include the origin of the alleles for heavy metal tolerance. Also name and explain the evolutionary forces that is probably most importa... click for more

Understanding the role of energy in biology... address concepts: 1) relating energy concepts to living things 2) discuss why energy is not recycled in an environment and why an ecosystem can only support a finite population of species 3) discuss our excessive consumption of energy and its implications upon future generations. 4) use historical evidence to draw conclusions regarding the affect(s) our excessive energy consumption has upon how species adapt, survive (or not) and how this affects their evolution

3 environmental science questions

1. Revolutionary changes in human culture have greatly changed the relationship between humans and the environment. How have the Neolithic and Industrial Revolution impacted the natural environment, and what is meant by the Environmental Revolution? 2. The recycling of elements is another vital functional process occurring in all ecosystems. Describe the biogeochemical cycles for carbon, phosphorous, and nitrogen. How have humans impacted these three cycles? 3. The goods and services performed by natural ecosystems are essential to human survival.
