Life on Earth - Biological Concepts from the Non-Science Major Perspective

I live in Detroit. If a Midwest winter will see plants, lawns, flowers and the like dying, how does photosynthesis play a part here? I think about Christmas trees, which amazingly are green during the winter months. But again, I can't make the correlation between photosynthesis and the greenness. What are your thoughts?

Life on Earth - Biological Concepts From the Non-Science Major Perspective

I think that the photosynthesis reaction is a very efficient system. I wonder if there is a way to see if more intense light actually helps the plant grow better, or if just being in sunlight under any intensity yields the same amount of work.

Life on Earth - Biological Concepts from the Non-Science Major Perspective

A question that comes to mind is how greenhouses work. The light is filtered through windows, but the heat and resulting oxygen is confined to the greenhouse? I believe that this situation does have a positive effect on growth.

Life on Earth

Life on Earth - Biological Concepts from the Non-Science Major Perspective Pine trees have a different way of getting through the winter. They have tough needles instead of leaves, and these needles can take freezing temperatures without being damaged. One trick they use is that the needles are covered with a layer of wax. This helps prevent freezing and water loss. They also contain natural anti-freeze chemicals that prevent them from freezing. The plants are able to continue photosynthesis just as long as they can get adequate water. Based on a plants adaptations to environmental conditions there are a variety of paths that can be followed in the carbon fixation component of p... click for more
